An Open Letter to Noynoy

Dear Noynoy,

I got a confession to make, I did not vote for you. I chose your cousin because I thought he is more competent and credible than you are, but the people have made their choice, the majority won and democracy has triumphed as they say. And we now have you as our President, whether we like it or not is now immaterial.

This is not a bitter letter that will circle around what could have been had my president won. This is about you and the Filipino people whose lives you’ve touched with your slogan of ending poverty by ending corruption. This is about your promise of a better life by choosing the road less traveled, the path of righteousness that you so rightfully claim.

You have become a symbol of hope for a country that has been divided by political colors and redundant slogans that all boast of good governance and the seemingly unreachable dream of ending poverty. You have renewed the glory that is EDSA, Yes, May 10, 2010 was a silent people power in the form of ballots that bore your name. Every Filipino who chose to shade your name on their ballots must have thought they were making the right choice. They believed in you.

The moment of truth has arrived, your time has come. The time to prove that you can deliver on your promise starts now, or from the day you take your oath of office on June 30. While the whole nation await for the messiah to save this doomed nation, your detractors are on the prowl, eagerly anticipating your first blunder, like vultures they will feed on its carcass until there’s nothing left of your good name.

Save some of it, for this presidency will definitely take its toll on you. Keep in mind that for every favor you extend to repay a certain “act of kindness” you betray your father’s name. For every advice you follow that reeks of vested interest you slowly become the tyrant that your mother ousted back in 1987.

We do not expect that after your 6 year rule that this country will rise on the ranks of the first world countries or that you have completely eradicated corruption. We are simply counting that you will pave the way for a better tomorrow by giving us what is due: A just, honest and competent government that alleviated poverty.

And may I remind you on this in case you forget in the course of your 6 year term: Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.

Sincerely yours,
Jay Beltran

i was initially thinking of posting my reply in facebook but i thought i'd end up stirring some debate with other friends...political debates are something i don't want to manage...so there...

sorry but i just resent that remark...walang corrupt does not mean walang mahirap...the correct phrase is kung walang tamad na umaasa sa madaling pera, walang mahirap...poverty begets poverty because we blame the system...i know it sounds high and condescending but i just can't accept resting my welfare (or my family's welfare) on a system that i know will never be corrupt free...it won't not with Noynoy, not with any other president...

sure limiting corruption would make things easier but you can't skip the chain...you start with yourself...work hard then ask the system to help you prosper...the thin layer of middle class (just my assumption that the middle class is a small group) knows this well...that's the why the middle class work their shit off...

i still question noynoy's abilities and i still doubt that he'll be able to deliver anything...it's funny how the media downplays his lack of accomplishment as "working under a low profile"...i truly believe that people are juxtaposing Cory's morality into him plus the fact that he has "served" office before running into presidency makes him appear competent...i suffer just thinking of this logic...seriously...

notice how i'm downplaying noynoy to lower my expectations...i'm counting on the fact that if he actually does something good (or more likely, he does nothing...at least nothing bad) then i'd feel better after 6 years...:D

except for the rather mixed metaphor ("your detractors are on the prowl, eagerly anticipating your first blunder, like vultures they will feed on its carcass until there’s nothing left of your good name." -vultures don't prowl; they circle in the air until the victim is dead), this is a very mature letter.

Resty: I totally agree with you. I guess Im hoping he'll challenge himself and maybe set the bar and prove his detractors that they were wrong about him, but I guess in the end, this will just be like Ron Artest in Game 5, a sub par performance... I do believe he'll try to come clean and remain clean though so as no taint the legacy of his parents.

Seth: Thank you for the kind remarks, yeah that may have been confusing. What's your blog url?

well...that plus that fact that i'm not exactly downplaying noynoy...he's done that to himself...i'm merely pointing out the obvious...LOLz
